Antagnavo via Red Tsingy
After breakfast, around 08:00, depart from Ankarana, and visit the sacred lake of Antagnavo (2,5 hours drive) to see crocodile. Don’t miss the sapphire diggers in Ambondromifehy village on the way. Next stop is the Red Tsingy, a strange sculpture looking like a forest of red chimneys (2 hour drive). The road may present some challenges, but fear not, for the captivating landscape that unfolds before you will make the journey all the more worthwhile. Visit the Red Tsingy nestled amidst the majestic canyons in the southeast of Diégo Suarez. Composed of sandstone, marl, and limestone, these unique formations emerge gracefully at the base of eroded canyons, within the singular sedimentary basin of Madagascar. The delicate balance of these formations is intricately intertwined with the diverse vegetation that surrounds them. As you explore this awe-inspiring site (2 hours), a short walk will allow you to appreciate the splendor of this natural wonder. In contrast to other Tsingys of Madagascar, the red ones are not of limestone and much smaller. Since the Tsingys are made of sandstone, they are eroded by weather and time – but at the same time, “new” Tsingys appear through new erosions along the canyon. This is also a good place to stop for lunch. In the afternoon, continue to Diego Suarez (4,5 hours).
